More about the Staples Center
The Staples Center is a multi-purpose sports arena located in Downtown Los Angeles. It first opened in 1999 and since then, it’s held an array of sporting and entertainment events for the greater Los Angeles area.
The arena seats up to 19,067 people for basketball events, 18,340 people for hockey events and about 20,000 people for concerts or other sporting events. The stadium itself also includes 160 luxury suites, including 15 event suites, on three levels between the lower and upper bowls of the stadium.
Construction first began on the stadium in 1998. A year later, the Staples Center was officially opened. Its first event included a Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Concert.
The stadium celebrated its 10th anniversary on Oct. 21 2009. At that time, the venue’s web site nominated 25 of the arena’s greatest moments from its first ten years. Then, the site had fans vote on the top ten.
The stadium has also had a few renovations made in recent years. In 2010, they refurbished the locker rooms for the Clippers, Kings, and Lakers. In addition, they installed a new high-definition center-hung video scoreboard. This replaced the original that had been hung since the building first opened. And in 2012, the stadium obtained a new hardwood court.
The stadium itself is the home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers in addition to the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings. The Staples Center has hosted seven NBA Final series with the Lakers, the 2000 Democratic National Convention, the 2002 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, HBO Championship Boxing matches, the Summer X Games indoor competitions, and the annual Grammy Awards since 2000, and other events.
