More Information about the Boston Celtics

Now part of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division, the Boston Celtics are one of the country’s first professional basketball teams and one of the longest-running and best-winning franchises. Currently, the team plays all of its home games at Boston’s TD Garden arena.

Background

With its name referencing Boston’s large Irish population, the Celtics started in 1946 as a Basketball Association of America team, but three years later, the NBA absorbed the franchise. As a result, they’re one of the eight remaining teams founded during the organization’s first decade.

From the beginning, they were one of the NBA’s most successful franchises, and to date, they’ve won 17 championships. While the Celtics were a fixture at the playoffs until the 1990s, the team’s first high point was the 1980s. At the time, the Celtics had Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish scoring points and taking them to the championships, which they won in 1981, 1984, and 1986. Further, they won a division title in every year but 1983 and 1989 during that decade.

Changes through the ‘90s took away the strength the team had in the ‘80s, and by the early ‘00s, the Celtics had one of the least-experienced lineups. However, by 2008, the team started attracting higher-quality talent, including Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. As a result, they took home an NBA Championship title in 2008, as well as Division Titles every year until 2012.

Successes

During their 70 years as a team, the Celtics won 7 NBA Championships, with the first being in 1957. Further, during that decade, they were the first NBA franchise to draft an African-American player.

Additionally, the Celtics have won 21 conference titles to date, with the last being in 2010. This amount is accompanied by 21 division titles stretching from 1972 to 2012.
