More about Austin
Austin is known as the capital of the state of Texas. Not only is it the capital, though; it’s also large. In fact, Austin is the 11th-most populated city in the United States, and the fourth most populated city in Texas. It’s also home to a range of venues that host live music and performances.
The area has a rich history of human habitation. In fact, the first inhabitants of the area were around during the late Pleistocene and were linked to the Clovis culture. The modern day founding of the city, though, occurred around 1839 after Texas won its independence from Mexico and then created a new capital city.
The city is known for its motto of “Keep Austin Weird.” More liberal than the rest of Texas, the city is known for its eccentricity and diversity. The city is also known for supporting its group of local independent businesses.
The city hosts a series of annual cultural events, including the O. Henry Pun-Off, a pun contest between several contestants. There’s also the Austin Gay Pride, the Austin Reggae Festival, the Kite Festival, and the Texas Craft Brewers Festival, among many others.
The city also hosts several film festivals, including the SXSW Film Festival and Austin Film Festival. It’s also been the location for several motion pictures, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, True Grit, How to Eat Fried Worms, and others.
You can find many museums within the city of Austin in addition to several sports teams, including the Texas Longhorns. There’s also the opportunity to visit one of the city’s many parks spread across the city.
As far as transportation goes, Austin is known as the most bike-friendly city in Texas. It was ranked as the seventh best city in the U.S. for biking by Bicycling Magazine in 2016. However, it scores lower in walkability, since it ranked number 35 among cities.
